About Róka

Vrouw die ijs schept op een tafel met verschillende ijsbakken in een keuken of cafe.

Who is róka?

Róka Gelato is the creation of Mieke Vandensande, who learned the craft of gelato-making at Carpigiani Gelato University (Benelux).
What began as a love for the taste of real Italian gelato soon became a passion for creating it herself. Bit by bit, more and more people began enjoying her gelato creations — and so, her business was born.

What makes Róka different?
Mieke has a severe nut allergy, so all gelato made by Róka is completely nut-free.
In addition, after often experiencing poor communication and inaccessible allergy information, she decided Róka would take a truly allergy-friendly approach. We take all allergies and intolerances very seriously, so please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions or special requests!

As a Brussels-based gelatiera, you're welcome to reach out in Dutch, French, or English.

What does
‘Róka’ mean?

Róka means ‘fox’ in Hungarian.
The fox is a recurring symbol in Mieke’s family: her grandmother’s pet name is Voske, meaning ‘little fox’ in Dutch. That side of the family also has Hungarian roots — hence the choice of language.

Beyond the family connection, the fox is also a totem of Brussels — a surprising home for these wonderful creatures. From the Royal Stadium to the Sonian Forest, they’re all around the city.
